Grapes are a popular fruit for humans, but they are poisonous to dogs. The toxic principles and pathogenesis of grape poisoning in dogs are currently unclear. However, most dogs with grape poisoning will show symptoms such as loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration within 6-12 hours after ingesting grapes. Oliguria or anuria renal failure occurs within 24-72 hours; once anuric renal failure occurs, most dogs will die or be euthanized.

The dose of grapes that causes poisoning in dogs is currently unknown. However, according to clinical feedback, ingesting 4-5 grapes will cause the death of an 18-pound (8.2 kg) dog.

For these reasons, it is important to keep grapes away from dogs. If your dog ingests grapes, immediately contact your veterinarian.
